Overview

How the ByteGate Edge device and this cloud platform fit together, and what this guide walks you through.

ByteGate is one system with two halves. The edge device is a Raspberry Pi at a store entrance — it scans QR codes, unlocks the door, and logs every entry, even offline. The cloud platform is the dashboard you're on right now (gate.humanbyte.ch): register devices, watch access logs and health, and push software updates.

These docs cover the device half — and they live here on purpose. Setting up an edge unit isn't something you do on the device alone; it's a round trip between the two halves. You build and wire the physical unit by following this guide, then register and run it from the dashboard on this same site. Keeping the setup steps right next to the dashboard where you'll manage the result means you never have to leave the platform — or dig through a separate code repository — in the middle of a job.

So this guide is the device side of your journey — install, update, configure, and troubleshoot — while the rest of gate.humanbyte.ch is where you operate the fleet those devices join.

Where to start

Setting up a brand-new device? Go in order — What You Need to gather the hardware, Add ByteGate to Your Home Screen on the phone or tablet you'll use on site, then Install a New Device: five steps from wiring to first heartbeat.

Already have devices running? Jump straight to what you came for — Update a Device, the Configuration Reference, or Operate & Troubleshoot.

Field tip

This guide is written for both field installers (who need clear physical steps) and engineers (who want to know what's happening under the hood). Every command shown here has a copy button — click it instead of retyping.
